In the previous post, I talked about taking a family vacation. A quick search showed several travel sites stating that about 50% of people will travel this summer. Think of it. Half of the US population will be traveling. And with inflation, gas prices, and the general costs of entertainment, those trips could cost a significant coin! Here are some tips to lessen the financial stress of taking a vacation and help you refresh and recharge as you should on vacation.

Create a checklist
As discussed in the last post, you need to have a plan. Checklists are GREAT because you can start one when you’re thinking about the trip and add to it as things come to mind. You can also determine what you NEED to bring and what you may WANT to bring.

Create a vacation budget
Here’s that word again – PLAN. It would help to plan how much you will need and where your money will go while out of town. This plan will also help you determine how much you need to save up for the trip’s expenses, allowing you to choose how much you may want to put aside each paycheck to have available for the vacation.

If you’re driving…
Download a gas-saving app like “Gasbuddy” which can help you find the least expensive gas in your area and on your route. Also, use cruise control and check your tires for correct inflation.

Pack your own snacks
Anyone who has ever driven on a long trip (particularly on a state turnpike) knows that food and snacks at gas stations and rest areas are overpriced. Bring salty snacks in larger, family-size bags. You can pack a small cooler to keep bottled drinks cold. You can also eat healthier if you choose.

If you’re flying…
Booking airfare early will allow you more options to purchase cheaper flights. Consider booking your trip three weeks to 3 1/2 months before you leave. And plan to go on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. These days cost less than the others.

Pack light.
If you’re flying, stick to the airline’s guidelines for bags. Some airlines will charge you extra for a checked bag. Try to stick with a carry-on. Check the airline’s website for the cost of checked vs. carry-on bags.

Consider where you’ll stay.
If possible, stay with a friend or family member. That air mattress might be worth it if you can save the cost of a hotel and, instead, have more fun on your trip.

Plan your activities BEFORE you leave.
Planning your activities ahead of time will help you budget. It can help you avoid last-minute plans, which may cost you more, and It will help you find the best deals and coupons for these activities.
